PodCamp Montreal 2009: the faces of success

It’s official. PodCamp Montreal is a success. We had 384 participants on site, and 731 unique visitors checking out our live stream throughout the weekend. While our American friends were more likely to follow us on the livestream this year, we were thrilled to attract a greater number of locals to this year’s event, given that our mission is to encourage and promote the use of social media by Montrealers. Our schedule was nicely divided between French and English presentations, and the Montreal sun came out to grace us with its presence, which is always nice when you’re sitting on the great terrasse at l’UQAM’s Design School where PodCamp was held for a second consecutive year.

PodCamp Montreal is a labour of love that doesn’t happen overnight. The organising committee has been working tirelessly since spring on sponsorship, communications and logistics, not to mention climbing into bed together to produce a rockin’ promotional video. The sacrifices we make for social media!

It’s been great to get all your positive feedback and suggestions for next year. Thanks for coming, for supporting the development of social media in Montreal and hope to see you in 2010!

2009 video archives

Ustream PodCamp Montreal 2009The bad thing about PodCamp is that, at any given time, you have to make a difficult choice between four different rooms and four different speakers.

Those of you who are still beating yourselves up over having missed a great presentation might be in luck. Laurent Maisonnave and his band of merry men, Christian Aubry et Guillaume Marin, have made video archives available for your viewing pleasure. Two of the four rooms were documented, so head over to Ustream to relive the PodCamp Montreal 2009 magic.

It should tide you over until next year.

Hooked on Ile sans fil

Île sans filMontreal’s free wireless Internet leader with its 120 000 members, Île sans fil is a different kind of sponsor. Driven entirely by volunteers, this association has the same kind of open, non conformist culture as PodCamp Montreal.

Thanks to a good number of Île sans fil members in attendance (sometimes with their families), PodCamp Montreal attendees benefitted from a free Internet WiFi access in all conference rooms.

We want to give a warm shout out to Île sans fil and its volunteers who supported us for a second consecutive year, and we hope to continue our relationship with this dynamic team for future editions.

A picture is worth a thousand words

PodCamp is never over until you empty your camera’s memory cards, probably still filled with unpublished photos! You can post them on Flickr using the tag pcmtl and publish them on our Flickr group afterwards.

We’d also like to give our special thanks to Eva Blue which did, once again, a fantastic job taking pictures during the event (plus some cool ones of the organizing team). You can look at her slideshow here :

Thanks again to the volunteers

If you felt the sessions went smoothly this weekend, it’s in large part thanks to the students of the e-commerce masters program at the Université de Sherbrooke. We really couldn’t have done it without them. Should you want to thank them personally, leave a comment on their blog. I know they’ll appreciate it.

Where to lunch?

It’s noon and you’re starving? Here’s a list of restaurants to hit near the Design School where PodCamp is being held:

- Pho 2000 : quick and affordable asian food, perfect for a tonkinoise soup or noodle dish. Itinéraire.

- La Paryse : Great if you’re looking for a good hamburger, this typical diner is the fast food mecca of the Latin Quarter. A good spot to hit if you missed poutine at the Banquise yesterday. Itinéraire.

- 4d : A panini and salad bar combined with a fine food counter. Ideal for a healthy lunch. Itinéraire.

- Thaï Express : This restaurant chain has a location on St-Denis, if a pad thai is what you’re craving. Itinéraire.

- Frites alors! : Known for its belgian fries, this bistro offers burgers and european hot dogs.   Itinéraire.

- Commensal : A vegetarian buffet awaits you here. Itinéraire.

Bon appétit!
